Huge congratulations to Hackett Middle School eighth grader Anya Miller, whose essay took first place as the middle school entry in the annual B'nai B'rith Capital Area Essay Contest.
The essay contest, sponsored by Schenectady B’nai B’rith, is designed to raise awareness about Holocaust remembrance and Holocaust education. It is open to middle and high school students from a 12-county region.
Students were challenged to write an essay on benevolent vs. evil public policies and the misuse of symbolism. Miller’s essay was the winning middle school entry. She won a $200 prize.
An honor student at Hackett, Miller’s science fair project was among the top five at the school this year. In 2021, Miller’s essay won second prize in the B’nai B’rith contest for that year. Also last year, she won second prize in an essay contest that asked students to write about a public art project in Albany. In addition, she was a 2020 recipient of a “Do the Right Thing” award (which she is pictured receiving).
