Entering the College Zone program for middle, high school families

Attention families of middle- and high-school students: You and your student can attend a free program called “Entering the College Zone” at Hudson Valley Community College on May 21.

The program will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and bus transportation is available. The program is designed for families who might not otherwise know or believe that college can be in their student’s future, and it is sponsored by the Albany affiliate of the Black Child Development Institute (BCDI).

You can download an application here or pick up a paper copy in your school’s main office. Please note that the application deadline has been extended to May 16. Completed applications can be emailed to barryw513@gmail.com or mailed to BCDI-Albany NY, P.O. Box 232, Glenmont, NY 12077.

Entering the College Zone communicates the early and ongoing preparation is the key to attending and succeeding in college. Topics covered at the event include:

  • Financing your way through the College Zone;
  • Accessing college information by computer; and
  • Creating a high school plan with an eye towards college.

Students also will receive some basic tips from high school and college students.

The event will conclude with a role model luncheon that features a keynote speaker. During lunch, families will have the opportunity to learn from a variety of professionals who have succeeded in college and their careers. ̾Ƶɫs and guardians and their students are welcome and encouraged to attend.

You may also return the application to your child's guidance counselor or home school coordinator. If you need additional information, contact Barry Walston at (518) 441-9877. You also can visit BCDI on Facebook @BCDIAlbany.
